The "Unofficial" Chris Walsh Fan Club About 6-7 years ago, my mom bought my brother and I football jerseys. Since I am
a lifetime Viking fan (it's genetically passed down from my mom, I have no
choice), I got an Anthony Carter jersey, number 81. It was an authentic NFL
jersey, but back then they charged you more to put the player's name on the
back. A few years later, Carter left the Vikings (he was kinda replaced by
another Carter, Cris) and there I was with my 81 jersey.
Dick, my neighbor for the Viking home games at the Metrodome, pointed out Walsh to me after Walsh had just laid somebody out on kickoff coverage during the 1996 season. According to Dick, this Walsh guy was really worth watching. Although I was impressed with the hit, the fact he had number 81 brought out a somewhat jovial enthusiasm for his play. I'd cheer for him, yell to have the ball thrown to him and even bug my friends in an enthusiastic (and apparently annoying) manner. But, the more I paid attention, the more I realized Walsh is an outstanding player. It also became apparent to me that I could be different than the main stream fan. I could be enthusiastic about the Minnesota Vikings through Chris Walsh - cheer for my favorite team just like everybody else, yet at the same time cheer just a little bit different from everyone else. I'm just that kind of guy. I had reached the point where I had annoyed my friends and family, confused complete strangers cheering for someone they had never heard of and felt the need to bring my Walsh appreciation crusade big time. Plus, I had several different papers to write during the 1998 pre-season, so I needed some good, decent homework avoidance.
