The "Unofficial" Chris Walsh Fan Club

Vikings 17, Jets 38 - 9/3/99

The last preseason game of the century for the Minnesota Vikings was a good game for our Chris Walsh. While the team itself struggled once again, Walsh turned in a great performance, both on special teams and offense.

Everyone I was viewing the game with grew excited when Mitch Berger finally got the ball in the end zone on the first kickoff. But subsequent kickoffs and punts resulted in Walsh tackles.

For the second kick off the Vikings covered, Walsh lined up as if to be kicking an onside kick. This confused the less-than-spectacular camera operators for KSTP, but I was able to slow-mo the tape and verify it was indeed Walsh. After Berger booted the kick off to the 1 yard line, Walsh ran down the field, filled the lane, dove by a blocker to wrap up the return man at the 25 yard line.

Walsh ended the day with three tackles, although one kick was called back after a running-into-the-kicker call.

As for offense, Walsh finished with 4 catches for 42 yards. A couple of his catches were excellent grabs, nabbing balls thrown behind him or while getting blasted by the defense. All of his catches were on third down, all but one resulted in a first down. The one that didn't make it was on a third and very long.

Walsh had a few others thrown his way, but were way off. Walsh did try to nab a pass that was thrown behind him, while he was hoping in the air. He did not make the catch and was visibly upset with himself. He ripped a wad of tape off his right hand, and chucked it at the ground. It looked as though the tape was for a hand injury, but I have not found any reports to confirm this.
